Yay, finally a strong woman who is NOT an elf! :D

Whenever those "Why didn't Tolkien write strong women" discussions pop up, and people name Galadriel and Éowyn as notable exceptions, I tend to sit on the edge of my seat and go "And what about Haleth?" Even people who think that Éowyn got pasted when she fell in love and married Faramir in the end, or that Galadriel, being in the LotR not much more than a Wise Voice (tm) (at least where we can see her) only shows strength in wisdom and providing food and gifts (which is traditional and not at all radical), should love Haleth: Independent, strong-willed, avoiding romance* and childbearing, and - despite the abovementioned independence and strong will, which didn't do much for, say, Aredhel - obviously wise enough to bring her people through dangerous times and keep them safe for a while (safe meaning, as usually with the First Age, that the majority of them survived. Well, until they died. We are, after all, speaking about mortals here). Oh yes, and she officially got to lead her people in the first place, after her father and brother were dead; and apparently did the job better than either of them.

I tried drawing her wearing thoroughly human garb; Haleth strikes me as the type who, even after the Haladin encountered the Elves, would prefer to keep them firmly sticking to their own traditions and styles (although I suspect she might have made an exception for weapons). Said style apparently consists of mostly undyed fabrics and leathers, but the Haladin went wild on the embroidery.

*Although I personally like the thought that Caranthir was infatuated with her at some point, and that she may have reciprocated that feeling. If you look reeeeally closely, you may notice that Haleth is wearing a second pendant that may or may not be a Fëanorian star...

I chose holly for the frame because holly is hardy and unaffected by cold, drought or storms, fitting Haleth's (apparently) indomitable spirit. (There are decidious species of holly, in case you think it's not a good symbol for a mortal woman. ;))
The circle itself is yellow to symbolise the sun - mortals are, after all, the people of the sun. (Well, also the composition would have been too dark otherwise.)

Last painting I finished in 2008 - time to start new things!

Now this is an excellent illustration of the Lady Haleth in her younger days; I must say that Haleth does seem to be something of scene-stealer even by the standards of The Silmarillion!:) (Smile)
